April 2009

Public symposium on natural resource governance organised by Forest Watch Ghana/ICCO/Tropenbos International - Ghana on 16th April, 2009 in Accra under the name: “Challenges of Legislative and Institutional reforms under the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA)”.

Ghana has received much international attention and recognition as the first timber producer country that has signed a Voluntary Partnership Agreement  (VPA)  with the European Commission. The VPA aims to guarantee and certify that in future only timber products which are legally produced and traded in Ghana will be exported to the European Union. This will enhance the sustainable management of the forest resources. Most stakeholders however agree that Ghana will face some major challenges to achieve this.

The objective of the symposium is to raise awareness about these challenges and to identify potential ways of dealing with them.
